Smudging: How To Get Rid Of
Negative Energy

A few years ago I bought a house. The timing was perfect, the house was perfect for me
and it just seemed as if the stars were aligning for me to buy it. It was a mid-century
modern remodel, turn key home. Everything seemed to fall into place including having
the money for a down payment!
At the closing table, the seller who was actually representing the company who flipped it
said to me, “I just feel that this house is meant to be yours!” Wow. I had tears in my eyes
because this very manly man got exactly what I had been feeling all along. This
confirmed my feelings and I felt very good about it. He said that two other contracts had
fallen through including someone that was a family friend. He had been the one to
personally remodel the home and said he almost wished he could have moved in,
himself. He said it had been a labor of love.

So I move right in and I have a beautiful home with a fenced in yard for my crazy
Goldendoodle puppy. It seems so perfect. I have a very private yard and one neighbor
is an elderly man who I seldom see and a privacy fence divides us and on the other side
is a woman who we quickly become best of neighbors. She tells me how happy she is
that such a nice person has moved in next door to her.
I’m there for a week and suddenly I’m having terrible issues with the house’s plumbing.
Great. Thank goodness I have a great home warranty and this company soon knows
me very well. I’m having second thoughts, was this house a terrible mistake?? I’m very
stressed out about the things going wrong but my plumber, who I now have on speed
dial, has assured me that it is all fixable but in the meantime I’m spending money and I
just gave all I had to buy this house! Then one day I notice my sweet pup has started
limping and then she refuses to put any weight on her back leg. I took her to the vet and
she’s had some kind of infection in her back paw that caused her to go lame. After
spending money at the vet she seems to be getting better. Then one day I go home
early from work because I’m not feeling well. I get home and I start having terrible chest
pains. I got worried about it so I went to the hospital and they tested me to make sure I
wasn’t having a heart attack and it turns out I had some kind of virus that was causing
me to have chest pains. All of these things happened within a month or two of moving
into this house. I call my spiritual mentor and I’m like, “Can you come over and do a
house cleansing?!” I just felt like something was terribly wrong. I had recently heard
about ‘saging’ or ‘smudging’ negative space and she suggested that I give that a try
first. So I started to do my research on how to do this.

One evening I’m having a conversation across the fence with my neighbor and I
was telling her about my recent hospital trip. She knew all the other issues I’d been
having. I told her that I was going to try saging my house. She said, “Well, I think
that would be a good idea! The person that lived in that house for 10 years had tons
of negative energy! I’m sure there is still some of it left in your house!” She told me
many stories and there was lots of anger, resentment, sadness, and neglect that
had been swirling for years in my house. So I buy a large sage bundle for saging
and I do what I had been reading online

I lit the sage bundle and I started in my basement and I went around to all the walls and
corners and made my way through the whole basement. The whole time I’m setting the
intention with my mind that I am clearing out any negative energy that is in this house,
that only positive energy is allowed to reside here. I am visually imagining that the
smoke is swirling around and clearing it out and I walk up the stairs and open the
outside door and watch the smoke go out the door and imagine that it is taking with it
anything negative. Then I start with the upstairs and I do this and I open windows and
watch the smoke and visualize it chasing the negative energy out the windows and
finally the front door. Strangely, I felt better after doing this! I decided that over the
course of the next couple weeks I would continue to really get it out of my house!
Here’s what I noticed:
Guests that would come over were commenting on how ‘nice’ it felt in my house! My
house felt cozy. I got the plumbing issues under wraps but then I started having some
expected furnace issues. I continue to sage and there are going to be problems in an
old house so I don’t expect that to go away but suddenly the vibe of my house was so
much more positive. I suffer from terrible nightmares and I began to notice that the days
following when I saged, I didn’t have terrible nightmares!

Fast forward a few years and now I make ‘smudging’ a part of my house cleaning ritual!
I try to set a day for my cleaning and after everything looks real nice, I do a quick
smudging sweep. I do like sage and it has a nice smell. Many of the sage bundles are
very large and I have read that it can help keep mosquitoes away so I usually throw it in
my firepit after I have used it a few times. Lately I have been using Palo Santo Wood or
Holy Wood, to smudge my house. I find that it has a lovely sweet smell and my house
smells so good after I use it.
Why Not Make Smudging Part of Your Cleaning Routine?
You can smudge and say words out loud or you can say them in your mind. The idea is
to ‘set your intention’ of getting rid of negative energy. If I notice I have a few nights of
nightmares, I smudge. If I have company or give spirit readings, I smudge. I find that it
offers a calm to my home and makes me feel more comfortable. And I just love it when
someone comes over and mentions how nice, cozy or comfortable my house feels
when they walk in.
