Mediumship: How I Give
Spirit Readings

The definition according to Wikipedia: “Mediumship is the practice of certain people
—known as mediums— to purportedly mediate communication between spirits of the
dead and living human beings.”
This may sound kind of scary to someone who doesn’t understand how it works. I know
that I originally didn’t start out wanting to speak to spirits. The thought of it was pretty
unsettling to me. I didn’t realize that I even had the ability to do it. Once I started
learning about Psychic Development and we did practice exercises with Mediumship, I
still didn’t realize I could do it. Here’s what is so interesting about how it works, I calm
my mind through meditation and let thoughts or memories come flooding in. That’s
basically it except they are not MY thoughts or memories!
Now that I have been giving regular weekly readings, I have a bit of a routine that I go
through. I try to meditate while holding certain crystals for about 15 minutes prior to
giving a spirit reading. While I meditate, I try to free my mind of all the clutter from my
own day. I started out with guided meditation because I could focus on someone’s voice
and then I would be able to allow my mind to go where it was telling me to go. Now, I
can quiet my mind, maybe listen to some meditative music and I speak with my
mediumship spirit guide. I ask my guide to help me to connect with a person’s spirits, to
‘see’ things clearly, ‘hear’ words clearly and to ‘feel’ their messages with accuracy. I also
ask to be protected from any low level spirits or entities while I am opening myself up to
receive messages for someone.

Psychics have four senses they can use which are called ‘clairs’.
Many people are stronger in a certain clair than others. For example I think that my
clairvoyance, or clear seeing, is my strongest ability. I can see, in my mind’s eye, many
details including colors, patterns and even floor plans of houses! I see people and their
details but that can sometimes be sort of fuzzy. There may be certain characteristics
that stand out more that help while I’m giving the person I’m reading for evidence of who
I am talking to. I usually start out giving some physical characteristics of a person and
then maybe I’ll notice a certain type of clothing that they wore, they may show me a
hobby that they had or even show me something that they liked in life like drinking
coffee or even smoking cigarettes. I don’t always get hair color right but people’s hair
changes so much over time that they can show me themselves in different stages of
their life. Sometimes deciphering whether someone is tall or short is difficult for me
because I’m only 5’1 and everyone seems tall to me! I am thankful to have this strength
because it is so helpful in figuring out who the spirit is that is coming through.

I am also clairaudient and although this is not my strongest ability I have noticed that I
am getting better at it. I will ‘hear’ words or phrases. Sometimes they make sense and
sometimes they don’t. There are times that I don’t want to say what I heard for fear that
it doesn’t make sense or that it’s not actually coming from spirit. This is the thing with
Mediumship, I don’t know until the person tells me whether or not it IS actually making
sense. I tell my client that I am just going to blurt out things that I see or hear and they
should write it down even if it doesn’t make sense to them. Many times it is something
that may come up later, they may talk to a family member about it or they may
remember an old forgotten memory. Here is a perfect example, I was giving a reading
and the spirit was telling me ‘applesauce’. I heard it a couple times and I thought, What
in the world is significant about applesauce?? Who actually loves applesauce? It was a
reading for a friend and I told her, I don’t even want to say this because it makes no
sense to me but he’s telling me to say ‘applesauce’. She started laughing and it made
sense to her! It was a family joke that stemmed from a line from a Brady Bunch episode
that they watched when they were kids, “Pork Chops and applesauce!” I’ve learned to
just blurt out whatever it is that I think I’m seeing or hearing because it isn’t for me to
understand and it may make sense to the client. In this case, it was an inside joke that
my friend shared with her siblings and it made her smile.
During my readings my objective is to give evidence of who is coming through by
sharing characteristics or memories. Once we figure out who we are talking to then I
may continue to share what they show me and sometimes instead of just old memories,
spirit will show me current events. These current events help us to realize that our loved
ones are still with us in spirit and they know the things going on in our day to day lives.
In readings that I have had done for me, my grandmothers come through and they will
talk about my new job, my new house and even mention things like me mowing the
grass. It feels so nice to know they are still near and to hear validation that they are still
with me. I feel them with me but sometimes hearing specifics from someone else just
makes it that much more special. The next objective seems to be the hardest for me
and that is giving a message from the spirit. Sometimes I use my clairaudience to hear
things to give messages but I also use clairsentience, clear feeling. I feel that giving a
message to someone is like speaking for them. I get a little nervous at this part and I’m
sure it will get easier with time. I want to do everything I can to communicate for spirit in
an authentic way so I struggle with messages. I should mention that I’m an empath
which means that I am affected by other people’s energies. This can mean that I can get
caught up in the emotions of spirit or even the client. I have a tendency to cry while I’m
giving messages and I feel that when I am this affected that I may be giving a proper
message.

I mentioned that there are four ‘clairs’ and the fourth is called claircognizance which
means ‘clear knowing.’ This is when you just ‘know’ something and can’t explain how or
why you know. The good news is that you can practice ways to make each area
stronger and clearer. Right now I am focused on Mediumship so that I can really
strengthen these skills and also because I have noticed how healing and helpful it can
be for my clients.
Talking To Our Loved Ones
Before my clients come to see me, I ask them to have conversations with the spirits
they would like to connect with and talk with them about coming to see me. I ask
them to either speak out loud or just in their minds and talk to their loved ones.
Sometimes they have a question or ask for them to say something specific. This can
come up or it doesn’t. It’s not an exact science because I can’t ‘make’ certain spirits
come through. I don’t know exactly why some do and then some don’t. I don’t know
why some come through strong and give clear messages and others that we want
to hear from either don’t come through or come through softly. What I do know is
that it takes a lot of energy on the spirit’s part to come through and I do my very best
to speak for them. My mentor made a very impressionable comment in one of our
study groups. She said that we should remember that one day we will meet the
spirits that we are speaking for when we cross to the other side. I want to make sure
that I do my very best to have the utmost respect for their messages!
